Today’s equity spotlight is on Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou faced ageism later in her life when her insights as an older woman were sometimes overlooked in conversations about civil rights and literature. Despite achieving great success, her voice was at times marginalized due to her age. However, she turned this adversity into activism, using her platform to advocate for the experiences and wisdom of older adults. She shared her life stories in works like "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," which emphasized the richness that comes with age, ultimately helping to elevate the voices of seniors in society.

Historical Context of Ageism
Ageism, a term popularized in the 1960s, refers to stereotypes and discrimination based on age. Historically, negative attitudes towards older adults have been prevalent, often depicting them as less capable. This perception began shifting in the late 20th century, as awareness of age diversity increased.

We are the Champions!

More Equity Trivia!

Today let's talk about microaggressions and Their Effects: The term “microaggression” gained prominence in the early 2000s, coined by psychiatrist Derald Wing Sue. These subtle acts of racism and prejudice can have lasting impacts. An example includes the frequent remark made to Latino individuals that they "speak English well," implying that they shouldn’t belong in the United States. Victims of microaggressions often report heightened stress and anxiety, underscoring the importance of awareness and education in combating these behaviors.

Today's Equity Trivia is about the Pronunciation of Names

A 2016 study by the American Psychological Association highlighted how mispronouncing names can be a form of microaggression that affects one’s professional opportunities and self-esteem. For instance, many individuals with non-Western names have recounted experiences where their names were consistently mispronounced or changed, leading to feelings of alienation in academic or corporate environments. Efforts to encourage proper pronunciation, like the “name pronunciation” practice in many classrooms, are essential for fostering respect.

April 7

Ready for some more Equity Trivia as we get ready for our challenge? Today we are learning about the challenges faced by immigrants

The “Chinese Exclusion Act” of 1882 is a stark example of historical discrimination against immigrants, specifically targeting Chinese laborers in the U.S. It wasn’t until 1943 that this act was repealed. Today, the challenges remain; immigrants often experience xenophobia, as seen in the anti-immigrant sentiments that surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting communities across various ethnic backgrounds, particularly those from Asian descent.

Ethnic Identity and Its Impact:

The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 marked a significant shift in U.S. immigration policy, allowing for the influx of immigrants from diverse backgrounds, including Southeast Asia and Latin America. This influx has enriched the fabric of American society but has also led to struggles with ethnic identity, as many individuals recount experiences of discrimination and the challenge of navigating dual identities. For instance, many Asian American youths in the early 2000s faced pressure to assimilate while also honoring their cultural heritage.

April 3

Understanding Race and Culture in Contemporary Society
Cultural Appropriation vs. Appreciation: In the 1980s and 1990s, various pop culture phenomena highlighted the nuances between cultural appropriation and appreciation. For example, the widespread adoption of Native American headdresses at music festivals has faced criticism for being an appropriation of sacred symbols. In contrast, artists like Paul Simon, who collaborated with South African musicians during apartheid in his album "Graceland" (1986), have been seen as fostering appreciation when done respectfully and with context.

Equity Trivia

As we celebrate equity and inclusion this month, we invite you to listen carefully to the information shared in our announcements. One of these trivia topics is “Race.” Pay attention to the key points and examples, as they will form the basis of our upcoming trivia questions.
1. Historical Roots of Race: The idea of race as a social construct gained traction during the 18th century, particularly with the work of naturalists like Carl Linnaeus (1758) and later, scientists who sought to classify humans into hierarchical categories based on physical traits. This classification laid the groundwork for systemic racism and discrimination seen in events such as the establishment of Jim Crow laws in the late 19th century, which enforced racial segregation in the United States, primarily affecting African Americans.

It's Ramadan!

This year, Ramadan will begin at sundown tonight and ends at sundown on Sunday, March 29.
The exact beginning and ending times of the month of Ramadan are based on the sighting of the first crescent Moon on the last night of the eighth month. Specifically, Ramadan is said to begin at the first observance of the crescent Moon over Mecca, Saudi Arabia (or on a date pre-determined by astronomical calculation). Because of this, start and end dates are not set in stone and may vary by a day.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is considered a holy month that honors the time when Allah, via the angel Gabriel, revealed the first verses of the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam, to a caravan trader named Muhammad (peace be upon Him).
Beginning at puberty, all Muslims (with exceptions) take part in the month-long, dawn-to-sunset fast that is the hallmark of Ramadan. Muslims believe that fasting cleanses the body, and the practice reminds us of the suffering of the poor and also brings us closer to Allah.
Eating and drinking (including water) is prohibited from dawn to sunset, and the day’s abstinence is offset by a pre-dawn meal called suhoor and a nightly meal known as iftar. For iftar, many traditionally break the fast by first eating dates, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him) is believed to have done to break his fast. Foods traditionally served at iftar vary, but food is often shared with a poor family during Ramadan.
It is important to note that we do have a prayer space available for anyone who would like to use it. If you would like more information please stop into the Library and ask one of the Librarians.
To all those among us who observe Ramadan, we say Ramadan mubarak (“blessed Ramadan”)!

Today's Black History focus is on Nina Simone

Today, we remember Nina Simone, a trailblazing singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist. Born in 1933, Simone’s music often reflected her strong commitment to social justice and the fight against racial discrimination. Songs like ‘Mississippi Goddam’ and ‘To Be Young, Gifted and Black’ became anthems for the civil rights movement. As Simone proclaimed, ‘An artist’s duty is to reflect the times.’ Let her legacy inspire us to use our voices creatively in the struggle for freedom and equality.

Day 3: Modern-Day Racism and Activism

Today, we confront modern-day racism, which manifests in various forms, including human trafficking and police violence. It is essential to recognize that racism is not confined to specific regions; it exists globally and impacts numerous communities. The Black Lives Matter movement has arisen as a response to this reality, advocating against systemic racism and calling for justice for Black individuals who face violence and discrimination. As we reflect on our history and its implications today, let us commit to standing against racism in all its forms and working towards a more equitable future for everyone.

February 27

Black History Month:  Bob Marley

On this day, we celebrate Bob Marley, a musical icon and advocate for peace, love, and social justice. Born in Jamaica in 1945, Marley used his music to address issues such as inequality, political oppression, and unity. His song ‘Redemption Song’ serves as a rallying cry for freedom and liberation, urging listeners to ‘emancipate yourselves from mental slavery.’ Marley's legacy continues to inspire generations to fight for justice and equality across the globe.

More Black History Trivia!

Day 2: The Civil Rights Movement** On this day, we remember the Civil Rights Movement, which emerged in the mid-20th century as a powerful force against racial segregation and discrimination targeting African Americans. The landmark Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, declared that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, paving the way for greater equality. We also acknowledge the ongoing struggle against systemic racism, which is embedded in the laws and regulations of our society, reminding us that the fight for justice is far from over.

It’s Thursday!

CIVIX Student Vote

Today is the Ontario election—a time for us to exercise our democratic rights and vote for the leaders who will shape our communities and the province as a whole. Last year, only 44% of eligible Ontarians participated in the provincial election. That is a lot of power given to a small group of people.
This year, we are hosting a student vote, organized by CIVIX, in the cafeteria for the classes that have signed up. This is a valuable opportunity for our school to engage in the democratic process and help shape the future for young voters.
For those participating, teachers, please allow your students five minutes to review the candidate slide deck that Mr. Belanger shared with you before heading to the cafeteria to vote.
We look forward to seeing you at your scheduled times.

Pink Shirt Day

Today is Pink Shirt Day.
Pink Shirt Day was initiated in 2007 as an act of kindness by two high school students in Nova Scotia after they witnessed another student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt.
This year's theme is “Let Kindness Grow.” Today is an opportunity to reflect on how we all can contribute to creating school spaces where all staff and students feel safe and welcome to be their true selves.
After these announcements please take some time to talk as a class about:
How does it feel when you show kindness or when a friend shows kindness to you?
Think of a random act of kindness you can do to lift up a friend today?

Black History Month: Ruby Bridges

Today, we honor Ruby Bridges, a courageous figure in the civil rights movement and a symbol of the fight for desegregation in education. Born in 1954, Ruby became the first African American child to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South, specifically William Frantz Elementary in New Orleans, at just six years old. Despite facing hostility and threats, she bravely walked into that school each day, embodying the resilience and determination of those who fought for equality. Ruby once said, ‘Racism is a grown-up disease, and we must stop using our children to spread it.’ Let her story inspire us to advocate for inclusion, understanding, and a better future for all children, regardless of their backgrounds.

Black History Month Trivia!

Day 1: The Struggles of Slavery** Today, we reflect on the harsh realities of slavery, defined as a social system where individuals are owned by others. At its peak in the 18th century, the Transatlantic Slave Trade forcibly transported millions of Africans to the Americas, where they were subjected to brutal conditions. The struggle for freedom eventually led to the Emancipation Proclamation, which formally abolished slavery in the United States. As we consider the economic motivations behind slavery, particularly in agriculture, we recognize the deep scars this history has left on our society.

Born in 1918, Mandela dedicated his life to the struggle for equality and justice, advocating for a peaceful resolution to end racial segregation. His resilience and unwavering commitment to freedom led to his release from prison after 27 years and ultimately to his election as South Africa’s first Black president. Mandela’s words remind us, ‘It always seems impossible until it’s done.’ Let us continue to strive for justice and equality in our communities.

She was known for her fierce determination, bravery, and strategic planning. Tubman stated, ‘I freed a thousand slaves; I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.’ Her relentless pursuit of freedom serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of liberation and courage in the face of oppression."

Lightning Girls Hockey!

The Lightning Girls Hockey Team travelled to York University to take part in their annual All Canadian Classic Tournament this past week in Vaughan.  The girls began pool play Wed morning by tying Gonzaga Catholic from Mississauga 2-2.  Kennedy Brooks & Calla Carter scored for the Lightning.  They dropped Game 2 to Frontenac Secondary from Kingston later that afternoon by a score of 2-0.  On Day 2 of the event, the girls began by tying Mayfield Secondary from Caledon 2-2.  Harlee Stevens & Reece Cameron both recorded goals in that game.  In the final game of round robin, the girls defeated King's Christian from Oakville by a score of 2-0.  Kennedy Brooks & Ava Smith scored the Lightning goals in that game.  This sent them to the championship game where they would once again face Frontenac Secondary.  The girls skated to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation after a goal by Calla Carter.  Unfortunately, the girls gave up a heartbreaker late in sudden death overtime to finish 2nd overall.  Reese Horton was outstanding in net over the 2 day event.  Coaches Mueller & Campbell were very proud of the way you represented your school!

Malcolm X’s call for Black empowerment and self-determination challenged societal norms and inspired countless individuals. This boycott lasted over a year and was pivotal in the fight against segregation laws. One of the best ways to prevent bullying is to promote an inclusive environment based on respect.
Respect is one of the Seven Grandfather Teachings the Anishinaabe use to teach how to conduct yourself in everyday life. The teachings are those that have been passed down for generations.
The Seven Grandfather Teachings are:
Humility
Truth
Love
Courage
Respect
Wisdom
Honesty
Each teaching is represented by an animal who also shares those characteristics.

Today is unity day. Around the school, staff and students will be wearing their school colours to show how we are all in this together and here for one another.

A bystander has the potential to make a positive difference in a bullying situation, particularly for the youth who is being bullied. When bystanders intervene, bullying stops within 10 seconds 57 percent of the time.

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

This week marks the start of Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week. Let’s take a moment to understand the difference between conflict, bullying, and hate-based incidents. Conflict is when two or more people have a disagreement, and they are generally equal in power, such as being of similar age or grade. Conflict can often be resolved by trying to work things out or talking to a trusted adult if it continues.
Bullying, on the other hand, involves repeated, unwanted, targeted behavior with an intent to harm, often accompanied by a power imbalance. If you witness bullying, speak up and support those affected. Don’t hesitate to get help from an adult.
Hate-based incidents go deeper. They involve harmful actions motivated by bias or prejudice against someone’s identity—such as their race, gender, or beliefs—and can happen in person or online. These acts are meant to intimidate or hurt individuals or groups and can have a profound impact on our community. It’s crucial to report these incidents to trusted adults.
Let’s take some time to think about: What should you do if you experience conflict, bullying, or hate-based incidents? Remember, creating a safe, inclusive environment starts with all of us.

November 8

Today we observe National Indigenous Veterans Day

While exact statistics are difficult to determine, the rate of Indigenous participation in Canada's military efforts over the years has been impressive.
During the First World War more than 4,000 Indigenous people served. It was a remarkable response and in some areas, one in three able-bodied men would volunteer. Some communities (such as the Head of the Lake Band in British Columbia) saw every man between 20 and 35 years of age enlist.
During the Second World War over 3,000 First Nations members, as well as an unknown number of Métis, Inuit and other Indigenous recruits served our Country.
While Indigenous soldiers again served as snipers and scouts, as they had during the First World War, they also took on interesting new roles during this conflict. One unique example was being a "code talker." Men like Charles “Checker” Tomkins of Alberta translated sensitive radio messages into Cree so they could not be understood if they were intercepted by the enemy. Another Cree-speaking "code talker" would then translate the received messages back into English so they could be understood by the intended recipients.
It has been estimated that as many as 12,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit people served in the great conflicts of the 20th century, with at least 500 of them sadly losing their lives.
This rich heritage has been recognized in many ways. The names given to several Royal Canadian Navy warships over the years, like HMCS Iroquois, Cayuga and Huron, are just one indication of our country's lasting respect for the contributions of Indigenous Veterans. This long tradition of military service is also commemorated with the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument in Ottawa. This deeply symbolic memorial features a large bronze eagle at its top, with four men and women from different Indigenous groups from across Canada immediately below. A wolf, bear, bison and caribou—powerful animals that represent "spiritual guides" which have long been seen by Indigenous cultures as important to military success—look out from each corner. Remembrance ceremonies are held at this special monument on Indigenous Veterans Day, which is observed each year on this day, November 8.
Today let us honour and recognize the contributions of the peoples who inhabited this land long before us. Together in peace and friendship.

It’s Friday!

Well, it's finally here! TGIF LDSS!  What a great selection today! We are offering Sweet and Sour Chicken with stir fry rice, Panzerotti - either cheese or turkey pepperoni, and yes - Mac and Cheese.

November 7

Numbered Treaties 29 & 45 ½
Each morning this week you've heard a land acknowledgement that cites the numbered Treaty 29 -also known as the Huron Tract Treaty signed in 1827 and Treaty 45 ½ signed in 1836.  These agreements were signed before Canada was officially a country. They helped develop our agricultural area into what it is today. The government recognized the rich farmland of this area but failed to hold up these agreements and broke them in order to open up more land for farming. Today, by recognizing and honouring these treaties we acknowledge they are still legal and modern documents. We can work together to abide by them, live more sustainably and create a more mutually thriving country.

Names of the Fallen Rehearsal

All students who signed up to participate in the Remembrance Day Assembly to represent the names of the fallen soldiers are to come to the large gym AFTER attendance is taken in their regular period 4 class today.  There will be a short 15-20 rehearsal where students will be given the names of the soldiers they will represent.
Please see Mr. Nauta at any point in time today if you would still like to sign up.
Thanks to all for volunteering.

November 6

Today for Treaty recognition week we will learn about the "Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt"

Yesterday we learned about the significance of wampum belts and their use as treaties in the indigenous culture. The Dish with One Spoon wampum belt dates back to before any European contact; roughly the year 1100 and it commemorates the relationship between the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Today, it is held up by Indigenous Peoples in Ontario as a peace agreement between the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee. It depicts a white belt, which represents the land and hunting grounds and a purple bowl in the middle with one spoon. The agreement is simple: take only what you need, leave some for others and leave the land clean. Today,  it is widely cited (and admired) for the reciprocal responsibilities with all of creation and its sustainability concepts.

Junior Girls Volleyball

Junior girls volleyball tryouts will continue Nov 6 & 11 in the LARGE GYM, please sign up using the QR code on the large gym door. Please also complete a TRYOUT FORM.

What is a wampum belt?
Wampum is a traditional shell bead of the Haudenosaunee. It includes white shell beads hand-fashioned from the North Atlantic whelk shell and white and purple beads made from the quahog or Western North Atlantic hard-shelled clam.
Before European contact, strings of wampum were used for storytelling, ceremonial gifts, and recording important treaties and historical events, such as the Two Row Wampum Treaty
The Two Row Wampum Belt (or Getswana)  is a treaty dating back to 1610 that the Haudenosaunee entered into with the early settling Dutch. It depicts two purple straight ,parallel lines that represent the two nations, living side by side, not interfering with each other.
Today, the Two Row Wampum is seen as a living treaty; a way for their people to live together in peace; that each nation will respect the ways of the other as they meet to discuss solutions to the issues that come before them.

November 4

Today Begins Treaties Recognition Week

In 2016, Ontario passed the first legislation of its kind in Canada declaring the first week of November as Treaties Recognition Week. By learning more about our collective treaty rights and obligations, we can create greater understanding and nurture relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

What is a Treaty?
A treaty is a Nation to Nation agreement that established the terms for how sovereign peoples would coexist peacefully while sharing the land.
Indigenous Peoples made treaties with each other long before the arrival of the Europeans. These agreements made sure that each nation understood the customs of the others, their territories and their laws. Indigenous people, while negotiating treaties over the use of the land and its’ resources, came to the table with the understanding that land was for everyone to share, as were its’ resources.
The European view on land was that it could be owned and given to someone else. Over the years, the governments of the time signed treaties with Indigenous Nations to acquire land that Indigenous Peoples traditionally occupied. Settlers would live on and develop this land. Indigenous Peoples believed that this was a sharing agreement and Europeans believed that the Indigenous Peoples were surrendering their land. Many Canadians believe that treaties are a thing of the past. Not only are treaties still being made today in the form of land claims, treaties made in the past remain legally-binding agreements between nations that must be adhered to by all settlers residing in this country.

Ontario Agriculture Week at LDSS

Hey LDSS, just a reminder that there are only two more days until the Thanksgiving long weekend.
This morning our school will be hosting the AgScape ThinkAg Career Competition in the small gym.
The timing is perfect because the week before Thanksgiving is Ontario Agriculture Week.
We are thankful for the work that many LDSS students and their families do every day to help put food on our plates.
It’s also the time for grade 11 and 12 students to join the Agriculture Specialist High Skills Major program.
Agriculture is changing and there are many exciting opportunities to explore, including new technologies like precision agriculture and genetics.
North Perth is at the heart of Canadian agriculture and home to some of Canada’s leading producers and ag companies.
There are so many different careers in the industry where you can help meet the challenge of providing healthy food for Canadians.
And you don’t need to be from a farming background.
You will meet industry professionals on field trips, gain valuable experience, and find out about great career opportunities right here in your community and beyond.
You also will have a chance to get professional certifications, like the  Grower Pesticide safety course this December.
To become an Ag Major, please drop off your application in Student Services or stop by the Co-op Office.
